It's a place where you're likely to encounter people walking both sides of the moral line, where one is just as likely to run into great kindness as unfeeling evil, and where the complex history and mix of cultures that make up the city of Vilnius constantly intrude into the present. On the way we meet a number of curious inhabitants of this unique district, everyone from a chemistry professor with an exhibitionist problem to the descendant of a 15th-century Lithuanian hetman obsessively carving wooden masks all night long. ![]() The unnamed narrator of Jurgis Kuncinas's Tula is our tour guide through the infamous poverty-stricken bohemian quarter of Vilnius known as Uzupis (literally, "beyond the river"), living his life on the fringes of society, including his journeys through various institutions for alcohol treatment. ![]() ![]() ![]() There are some truly great panels and the movement is well done, and the color palette gives it all a doom's day feel, which is appropriate. Why are Fred/Illyria suddenly separate entities sharing the same body? Why are Spike and Illyria kissing? Why is Fred so helpless? She might be human, but she survived years alone in Pylea. Even so, I felt like I was missing big chunks of information, and the timeline didn't seem to match up with the end of S8 of Buffy very well either. Nothing's really properly explained, actually, but since this is a prequel, I guess it's just setting up things that happened (and get explained?) in Angel: After the Fall. ![]() And the villain is annoying and took way too long for them to kill, considering that her powers were barely explained. Gordon, Author of An Introduction to Africana Philosophy I applaud this reissue, which should bring Rodney's prescient analysis to a new generation struggling from below, in whose hands, he would have reminded us, is no less than the future of humankind. This classic work of black political thought, political economy, and Africa history inspired scholars and political activists in the struggle against colonialism and its misrepresentations of the past. Walter Rodney was a pioneering scholar who provided new answers to old questions and posed new questions in relation to the study of Africa. Cornel West, philosopher, author, critic, and activist This book is a legendary classic that galvanized freedom fighters around the world. Gerald Horne, historian and author of The Counter-Revolution of 1776 and Confronting Black Jacobins ![]() Beautifully written and expertly argued, it is that rare book that can be called a classic. Walter Rodney's magisterial opus is recognized globally as a landmark in African studies, not to mention the history of colonialism and imperialism. ![]() ![]() ![]() This book draws you in with its easy-to-read, digestible chapters and the down-to-earth language that Haig uses when weaving sentences about tough subjects. The British author begins his tale by recounting his breakdown in Ibiza, Spain years before, and then leads readers through the arduous years of healing that follow. “Where talk exists, so does hope,” Haig writes, and this has been my experience, too. He has found that writing and reading have been invaluable friends along his journey and he wants to pass the torch along. It was, more importantly, the first time he had told his story about anxiety, depression, and a breakdown that had happened when he was 24 years old.įrom the first chapters of the book, we see why Haig is writing: because he believes sharing stories can be a method of healing for those that struggle with mental illness. Reasons to Stay Alive, published in 2015, was the author’s first dive into the realm of non-fiction. Reasons to Stay Alive immediately drew me in and kept me company during the dip down. As I was scouring library selections on mental health, Matt Haig’s memoir popped up and I gave it a try. ![]() ![]() Some sudden life changes had caused a dip in my mental health, and so like a moth to a flame, I was drawn once again to literature that could stand by me in the valley. I had formed no very inaccurate estimate of the probable effect of those Poems: I flattered myself that they who should be pleased with them would read them with more than common pleasure: and, on the other hand, I was well aware, that by those who should dislike them, they would be read with more than common dislike. It was published, as an experiment, which, I hoped, might be of some use to ascertain, how far, by fitting to metrical arrangement a selection of the real language of men in a state of vivid sensation, that sort of pleasure and that quantity of pleasure may be imparted, which a Poet may rationally endeavour to impart. This was much more evident in this book, and I loved seeing what he does and why, and seeing him care about Mitch and Sydney. And that is what makes him a phenomenal anti-hero. He cares and loves certain people, and he isn’t drawn by a desire to kill just for the fun of it, or to rule, or whatever it is that makes people become evil. But he’s still a good guy, with a good heart, no matter how small it is. He doesn’t have the same views of what is right and wrong, nor does he particularly care about the suffering of others at his hands. He’s more like the lesser of two evils, which makes him a very interesting character. ![]() I’ve always loved Victor because he’s not necessarily the good guy. ![]() |
